On November 19, 2022, McCafferty, at 76 years old, was discovered dead in his cell at HMP Glenochil. An FAI was convened to ascertain the cause of the death, as is typical with any death in prison.
James McCafferty, the embittered former Hibs kit man, passed away in jail due to health issues, according to the findings of a fatal accident inquiry.
In 2019, McCafferty was sentenced to six years in prison for a string of abuses against young boys that began in the 1970s. He worked as a junior coach at Celtic and as a kit man for Easter Road and Falkirk.
On November 19, 2022, McCafferty, at 76 years old, was discovered dead in his cell at HMP Glenochil. An FAI was convened to ascertain the cause of death, as is normal with any death in custody.
The results of the FAI, which indicated that McCafferty died from problems related to “Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease,” were released by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
It also proved that no safety measures could have been done to prevent the deaths or flaws in any operating system.
The investigation also revealed that McCafferty had a lengthy medical history and that, at the time of his death, he had a benign lesion in his left frontal lobe, hypertension, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and dementia.
While some of McCafferty’s victims were attacked in hotels, on training grounds, and even in his car, one victim was attacked at Celtic Park. The beast made his court appearance for the second time after his 2018 sentencing of three years and nine months in prison following his admission of eight counts of sexual assault on a 14-year-old victim in Northern Ireland between 2012 and 2015.
“You took advantage of your position of trust as a football coach to groom and then sexually abuse boys who played for your teams,” Judge Lord Beckett stated during the sentence hearing. You were skilled at figuring out each boy’s situation so you could use that information to your advantage and sometimes even use it to manipulate the boys’ parents.”
