One could have excused Coventry City supporters for believing that this was finally their season. The highlights of the Sky Blues’ previous two seasons were a play-off final and an FA Cup semi-final, both held at Wembley. Though the glitter was well-earned during the club’s terrible phase, Mark Robins and company were still unable to achieve long-term success.
The Sky Blues appeared primed to contend for the Championship title after a rush of summer acquisitions to expand on the moves made a year earlier, but things haven’t quite gone as planned.
With just two victories to their name after nine games in the new season, Coventry is ranked twenty-first in the standings. One of the five losses was a very agonising trip to Leeds United, which made Robins wonder about the mindset of his team. The Sky Blues bounced back with a 3-0 success over Blackburn, suggesting that the message may have been received.
But before their journey to the CBS Arena last Saturday, City was back to their old problems as they were defeated 2-1 at home by Sheffield Wednesday, a team that was going through almost as much as Robins’ team.
