After Lawrence Shankland turned down a new deal with Hearts, Rangers are preparing a countermove, sources have told Football Insider.

Senior journalist Pete O’Rourke stated on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that the Rangers are still considering the 29-year-old as a possible replacement for Cyriel Dessers, 29, despite the player’s “hit-and-miss” start to the campaign.

If Shankland doesn’t extend his current contract by the end of the season, it will expire at the conclusion of the season and he will be available for a significantly lower price in January.

Rangers expressed interest in signing the striker during the summer, but Hearts outbid the Glasgow team following Shankland’s stellar 2023–24 campaign, which saw him top the Scottish Premier League scoring charts with 24 goals.

The Scotland international has only scored once in 11 games in all competitions this season, albeit he hasn’t been able to replicate his outstanding form.

Rangers view Lawrence Shankland as an improvement over Cyriel Desser.

Dessers scored seven goals in Rangers’ opening nine games, but he has now gone four games without a goal in the Europa League and domestic competitions.

Even yet, he continues to lead the team in scoring, three goals clear of Welsh playmaker Tom Lawrence in second place.

Shankland is now playing for Scotland on the international front as they get ready for two challenging matches in the UEFA Nations League against Portugal and Croatia.

Rangers’ next game against Hearts and Shankland is scheduled for early November at Ibrox, which might be his new home.
