Tommy Watson, a winger for Sunderland, made an impression earlier this week.
After making several cameo appearances in recent weeks, Tommy Watson, the young star for Sunderland, has stated that he is “ready to thrive” in the starting lineup.
This season, Regis Le Bris has included the young winger in all but one of his matchday squads. He has also started each of the Black Cats’ last three Championship games off the bench. He made his debut for Graeme Murty’s U21 team on Monday night in a 6-0 thumping of Derby County, scoring a brace and providing an assist.
Watson believed he could have done better, even with his spectacular return against the Rams, when he spoke with Sunderland’s internal media team following that game. To be honest, it’s a little bittersweet, he remarked. We won 6-0, and even though I didn’t play my best and neither did we, I still scored two goals and provided an assist. It feels nice to be back in the team and with the 21s. I’m thrilled tonight because I want to be the kind of player who creates and scores goals since doing so helps the team win games.
Watson said he is “ready to thrive” in the senior squad after discussing his previous experiences with the first team. However, he added, “It’s a bit of a jump up.” There are fewer opportunities because the Championship games are more planned and the teams are more formidable opponents.
“Dropping back down to the 21s tonight, I don’t think I was at my best personally, but I still created and converted a tonne of opportunities. Sincerity be damned. I’ve been anticipating this chance for a very long time. Although I’ve been on the sidelines for a while, getting more first-team playing time is something I really want to do.”
Le Bris, the head coach of the first squad, stated the following about Watson during a recent press conference: “Tommy is still young.” That’s how Romaine [Mundle] waited for his opportunities behind Jack Clarke. You must put in the background work to be prepared for this moment even if we are unsure of when this door may open. Tommy seems to be putting in a lot of effort, he’s getting closer to the professional team, and he has promise. Even though he is on the bench, he needs to wait and learn from these experiences.”
