According to Derek Ferguson, Rangers now need to “seriously look at” foreign investment through Dave King in order to prevent falling further behind Celtic in terms of finances.
Following John Bennett’s retirement from the club due to health issues, the former Ibrox chair asserts that there is interest from the United States and Saudi Arabia and wants to return for a two-year period [Rangers Review, 15 September].
The financial gap is growing, and it is evident on the pitch as well. The last three Scottish Premiership titles have gone to Parkhead, with Champions League money following each time.
Following the announcement of director of football operations Creag Robertson’s resignation, Rangers are still suffering from high-level defections [Scottish Sun, 8 October].
Therefore, former Gers player Ferguson feels the board should take King’s recommendations into consideration during a difficult time at Ibrox.
Rangers may attract US and Saudi capital to Ibrox.
In an exclusive interview with Ibrox News, he stated: “We need to take this seriously and Dave King’s contacts, which I’m sure he has.” The board ought to give that some serious thought, regardless of whether it’s America or Saudi Arabia.
“I’ve said it before: you measure yourself against Celtic. They have some cash on hand and, evidently, their Champions League campaign is off to a terrific start with their victory over Slovan Bratislava.
That will bring in millions and millions of dollars, so the board must take a close look at that.
“I think we need to broaden our horizons and consider other options if we continue in the same direction and consider some of the guys who are invested and on board.”
“I’m all for that because I think that’s what Dave King brings to the party and to the table.”
