The 72-year-old, who resigned from his position at Serie A team Cagliari at the end of the previous season, acknowledges that he has been tempted to return to professional football.

Claudio Ranieri, the idol of Leicester City, is holding out for a position on the national team despite the temptation of going back to club football.

Ranieri left Cagliari in May, having pulled off a remarkable comeback to keep the Italian team in Serie A following a stunning promotion the previous year. This marked the end of his career as a club manager. However, the Premier League-winning manager of City is still in the game and is holding out for an entertaining opportunity, ideally involving a European national team.

In the interim, though, Ranieri has been approached by clubs, and despite not wanting to take on managerial responsibilities, the 72-year-old admitted he was tempted. He hasn’t given in yet, though, as he waits for a call from a national team. Prior to taking over at City, he had only coached an international team once, having been fired from his previous position with Greece after just four months.

“I have received a few phone calls, even from Italy, and I miss the adrenaline of football a bit,” Ranieri said to Gazzetta dello Sport. Though ultimately I refrained, I must confess that I was inclined to return immediately.

“My concept is still the same as it was at the end of May. I’m looking forward to something exciting and enjoyable, ideally involving a national team from Europe. I believe I’m done at the club level, but football is weird. Never assert the negative.

Ranieri’s success with City has made him inextricably linked to football miracles. He still believes there will be more surprising victories in Europe, and he is encouraged by Brest’s ascent. After placing third in Ligue 1 the previous season, the French team is currently ranked second in the 36-team Champions League standings after winning their first two games in Europe.

When asked if he could predict another Leicester underdog victory, Ranieri replied, “I hope so, because I like dreams.” Girona was mentioned last year, but they are a club in the Man City galaxy. I like Brest, who has all the Champions League points.
