Tom Cannon, a 21-year-old striker, is allegedly receptive to loan-to-buy proposals from Championship clubs, and City may recall him from his loan at Stoke in the new year.
Tom Cannon’s recall by Leicester City in January could be an attempt to ignite a bidding war for the striker.
When the transfer market reopens in the new year, City will have the opportunity to bring Cannon back from his time at Stoke. The club is apparently looking to renegotiate a loan-to-buy deal for the 21-year-old, capitalising on the significant interest in him. According to Alan Nixon, City expects the sale of Cannon to generate £10 million.
Cannon has been pursued by teams around the Championship, including Sunderland, before going on loan to Stoke on deadline day. The Stoke loan agreement does not currently include a buy option, but according to Nixon, West Brom and Sheffield United, two teams vying for promotion, may present loan-to-buy proposals, which would compel the Potters to follow suit.
Cannon’s contract has a recall provision, which allows City to arrange for a possible move for the Republic of Ireland international. However, he could only switch teams on New Year’s Day when the window opens.
Since joining Stoke, Cannon has scored four goals, all of which came in a 6-1 thumping of Portsmouth in the same game. That exceeded his three-goal total for City the previous season, when he was a bit player after joining for £7.5 million from Everton.
Given that Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka were both ahead of Cannon in the standings and that Odsonne Edouard had joined on loan from Crystal Palace on the day of the deadline, City manager Cooper was happy to let Cannon go. Vardy, who turned 38 in January, has two goals under his current deal. He will not be returning to King Power Stadium after the summer.
