Josh Sargent, a United States international forward, will not be available until the new year for Norwich City, Leeds United’s Championship promotion rivals.
Johannes Hoff Thorup, the manager of the Canaries, announced that Sargent needs surgery for a groin ailment that will prevent him from playing until 2025.
The 24-year-old scored 16 goals in 26 league games last season and has four goals and five assists in 12 Championship games so far this year.
In a tight match last month, Norwich held Leeds to a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. With 23 goals from 13 games, they are tied for the division’s most goals.
Thorup’s team will miss Sargent’s connection with aggressive midfielder Borja Sainz, who has already scored 11 goals in 2024–2025.
For everyone, it’s not the best situation. The head coach stated, “We have options and possibilities for other players to come in.”
“An Under-21 player who had just returned from a Friday night match against Manchester City was one of the 15–16 outfield players available for minutes [against Cardiff].”
“It’s a crazy situation that we are in, but we deal with it, we support each other and we don’t blame each other.”
What effect does this have on the Canaries’ push for promotion?
Despite being eight points behind second-place Leeds and three points outside of the play-off spots, Norwich has been undefeated at Carrow Road for more than a year, a streak Thorup will try to continue even without Sargent.
