Philippe Clement’s expectations of his Rangers club and the current state of affairs are not the same.
The manager mentioned playing aggressive football and moving the ball forward fast, but the Ibrox team hasn’t done either in recent weeks.
Rangers supporters finally noticed an improvement against Motherwell at Hampden, as the team’s players were sharper and more technically proficient, which may be a portent of things to come.
Three seasoned players are holding the Rangers back.
Clement’s over dependence on underperforming players has been the most frequent—and legitimate—criticism levelled at him.
Specifically, Cyriel Dessers, Tom Lawrence, and James Tavernier, who have all received the most criticism for their turgid and stale performances.
As demonstrated at Hampden, Lawrence and Dessers have contributed a respectable number of goals, but they don’t do much else when they don’t score.
Even though he scored, Dessers’ performance was far from satisfactory because he missed several excellent chances to put Rangers ahead, including a “absolute sitter.”
With the difference between those who are excelling and those who are letting the club down widening every week, it has been somewhat unfair to include players like Vaclav Cerny, Nedim Bajrami, Nicolas Raskin, and Connor Barron with some of the players who are holding the team behind.
If some members of the team are unable to fulfil the manager’s expectations, the team will never be unified.
Clement assesses the potential level following the Rangers’ comeback.
After the victory over Motherwell in the semi-final, Clement wanted to reaffirm that the second half might not be an isolated incident but rather the start of something bigger:
Clement asserted, “But this needs to be a reference game for this squad, for this new squad.”
“To continue doing what we’ve been doing a lot last season, which is to dig in and in every circumstance to maintain our conviction, to continue fighting, and to shatter the wall if we go behind.
“Having this game as a reference at the end of the season can be huge. I would like to witness this mindset every three days.
We have been discussing that, but talking is insufficient. We must perform it on the pitch.
For Clement, it might also be a huge game. The Rangers manager has been given a preview of what lies ahead after witnessing a forward three of Cerny, Bajrami, and Danilo cause Motherwell a lot of trouble as Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo support the defenders.
a future in which none of the three people in their 30s start every game.
