Prior to Saturday’s visit from Sunderland, Coventry City has officially announced that Mark Robins has been fired.

Rhys Carr has been appointed as Coventry City’s temporary head coach for their match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Earlier this morning, the club announced their highly contentious decision to fire Mark Robins.

The Coventry supporters hold Robins in high regard for his outstanding contribution to the team’s ascent through the leagues to the play-off final and an FA Cup semifinal, frequently amid much upheaval off the field.

However, the Sky Blues are barely out of the relegation zone because of goal differential and now sit 17th in the Championship table. Derby County defeated them at home on Wednesday night, and it seems that this loss was the last straw for the club’s board. Carr will oversee the team in the interim as the club takes its time selecting his replacement and putting in place a new organisational structure.

After a reorganisation of Robins’ backroom staff that saw long-time assistant Adi Viveash leave, Carr joined the team in the summer. Carr came from Wolves, where he was the individual development coach for the team. George Boateng, a former midfielder for Coventry City, will help Carr this weekend. Boateng was also assigned to this summer’s backroom crew.

“Coventry City Football Club has made the difficult decision to terminate Mark Robins’ contract as manager with immediate effect,” reads the complete statement from Coventry City. Since 2017, Mark has been in charge of bringing Coventry City Football Club back from the bottom of League Two to the top of League One, just outside of the Premier League and a second FA Cup Final, and playing in the Championship for the fifth straight year.

Over that period, Mark oversaw and constructed a number of teams that outperformed their infrastructure, their budget, and our city’s playing style, credibility, and belief—all of which had been lost and eroded over the years. Those who observed such actions and the larger community, who once again started to reignite their love for our Club, will never forget these accomplishments.

Without Mark and his team’s inspirational deeds, Coventry City would undoubtedly not be where it is now.

After more than seven incredibly successful years in charge, the Club is well aware that this is a challenging time, and this choice is not made hastily. However, the team’s long-term performance has just fallen short, and as a result, the club’s board has made the decision to immediately replace the team’s captain.

Although the role will be that of Head Coach operating under the new framework the Club has established over the past two years, the Club will take its time in selecting a replacement for Mark. An “Interim Head Coach” will soon be appointed by the club to lead the squad against Sunderland on Saturday.

Next week, the club will also host a “Fans Forum” where the chairman will address any and all queries regarding this topic as well as other issues. The specifics of this will be revealed later. Mark’s accomplishments at the Sky Blues, frequently in the face of financial constraints and uncertainty, will make him renowned as one of the Club’s finest managers ever.

He was able to inspire players, staff, supporters, and the Club as a whole to achieve amazing things. We all hope that Mark has a prosperous future.
