According to sources who spoke to Football Insider, Rangers have already started the process of finding a successor for James Tavernier, who they intend to let go at the end of the current campaign.
The Ibrox management is beginning to feel that it’s time for both sides to move on after the skipper has put in a succession of lacklustre displays this season.
Rangers plan to sell Tavernier in the summer of 2025 in a last-ditch effort to collect money from his departure, even though his current deal expires in 2026.
By the end of the current campaign, the 33-year-old will have been with the team for ten years. Since joining from Wigan in 2015, he has made 479 appearances.
In addition to helping to win the SPFL title, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup, his 126 goals and 132 assists throughout that time have made him one of Ibrox’s legends.
Behind the scenes, though, his deteriorating play has caused serious concerns, and the transfer team is eager to find a replacement as early as January.
As they line up possible successors at Ibrox, the Rangers are open to selling James Tavernier.
After failing to come to an agreement during the transfer window, Football Insider reported in September that the Gers might try to cash in on their captain in January.
However, considering Philippe Clement’s lack of depth in his team and his ongoing significance to the squad and dressing room, a January departure is thought to be unlikely.
The recruitment team at Ibrox have began developing a shortlist of potential replacements for whom they will move after the right-back’s departure.
They might have to wait until the summer to sign a deal, though, as Ibrox’s financial predicament has restricted their options in the transfer market.
In the summer, Football Insider reported that Tavernier had been the target of attention from Saudi Arabian and Turkish clubs, and the interest is believed to have persisted.
