Claudio Ranieri, the former manager of Chelsea and Leicester City, is apparently in negotiations to return to management at Roma in a heartfelt manner.
After guiding Cagliari to safety in Serie A, the 73-year-old announced his retirement from management at the end of the previous campaign.
Before returning in 2023 to supervise the team’s return to Italy’s top division, Ranieri had guided the team to back-to-back promotions in the beginning of his tenure.
The Athletic reports that Raneiri has now started discussions about maybe taking over as manager of his native club, Roma.
If an agreement is reached, it would be Ranieri’s third stint as manager, with the idea that he will serve as interim manager until the end of the current campaign.
Despite spending more than €100 million (£83 million) during the summer transfer window, Roma is now ranked 12th in Serie A.
After a sluggish start to the season, club veteran Daniele De Rossi was fired as Roma’s manager in September.
Ivan Juric, his replacement, managed just 12 games, and his final game in command was a 3-2 loss to Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico.
With Roma going three games without a victory, Juric left with a record of four victories, three draws, and five losses.
The decision to put Ranieri in a caretaker position has been seen as an attempt to appease Roma fans, who have demonstrated against the club’s owners, The Friedkin Group, for firing De Rossi.
The Italian almost guided Roma to the Serie A championship during his first stint as manager.
Under his leadership, Roma ended the 2009–10 campaign two points behind Inter Milan in second place.
On their way to winning the Treble, Inter, under the leadership of Jose Mourinho, also defeated Ranieri’s team in the Coppa Italia final.
After placing sixth in 2019, Ranieri rejoined Roma to serve as interim manager until the end of the season, however the team was unable to qualify for the Champions League.
When the seasoned manager went to the Europa Conference League semi-final between Roma and Leicester in 2022, he received an unforgettable reception.
Both sets of fans recognised his contribution to both clubs by giving him a standing ovation.
Ranieri is most known for his tenure at Leicester from 2015 to 2017, during which he famously assisted the team in winning the Premier League in 2016.
Over his career, the Italian has had an incredible 23 managerial appointments.
Throughout his career, he has played for Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Napoli, among other elite clubs in Europe.
