Next Monday, Doug King will address applicants in an attempt to select a new manager for Coventry City.
The opportunity to succeed Mark Robins at Coventry City has piqued Gary Rowett’s interest.
Since resigning from his position as Birmingham City’s temporary manager in May, 50-year-old Championship manager Rowett has been unemployed. Despite earning 11 points from his eight games as manager, including a 3-0 victory over the Sky Blues in April, Rowett was unable to keep the Blues from being relegated to League One.
For the most part of his managerial career, Rowett has managed teams in the top half of the Championship, including Millwall, Derby County, where he finished in sixth place, and Birmingham, where he was initially in charge from 2014 to 2016.
Although Rowett has been mentioned in the Sky Blues job betting, owner Doug King may favour more well-known applicants like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Frank Lampard, and Lee Carsley. King reportedly narrowed down the applicants to a shortlist on Friday.
“I have an agent who does the work for me and contacts clubs who have a vacancy,” Rowett said when asked about the position at the CBS Arena by Give Me Sport. I’m out of clubs in the Midlands! However, Coventry is a huge club, in my opinion. Coventry would be a very alluring club for any manager in the Championship. Another one is Burton Albion. I have already assisted them there.
“Interviews are definitely different now,” he continued. Many sporting directors are now in charge, and teams are looking for a manager that can work with their long-term plan.
“The interview was essentially just a conversation when I initially started. You could have all the information in your brain, but you still needed to prepare. You now show off your game model. Although every club functions differently, I have participated in interviews when psychometric testing was used. You may occasionally be asked to evaluate matches and players and even suggest new additions to strengthen the team.
