After rumours circulated earlier this week about the transfer, Sunderland has officially confirmed it. Ben Crompton, a defender for Sunderland, has agreed to a one-month loan to Tamworth, a non-league team.

Earlier this week, the Black Cats’ under-21 squad defeated Tamworth in the National League Cup, and Crompton played well against the fifth-tier outfit. With a cool finish, the centre-back scored in the newly established tournament’s 5-1 victory.

After the match, Tamworth got in touch with Sunderland about a loan, which has now been approved by everyone. The 20-year-old defender joined the National League team on a one-month loan until January, at which point the transfer will probably be reevaluated.

Following the transfer, Crompton should be available for Andy Peaks’ team right away in time for their league matchup against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

Robin Nicholls, Sunderland’s academy manager, said on the agreement: “This loan gives Ben a great chance to see professional football at the National League level and advance in his career.

“We were impressed by the approach and ambition of some of the Tamworth staff when we faced them earlier in the week, and we think Ben will have the opportunity to flourish in their environment.”

Crompton has previously made his Sunderland first-team debut, playing against Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup the previous season. Despite being included in two senior match day squads so far this season, he has not yet accrued any playing time. Crompton, who left Shrewsbury Town to join Sunderland, has a deal with the Academy of Light that expires in the summer of 2025.
