The midfielder pledges to stay until 2028.
This season, several Scottish football players are playing all across Europe, and one of them has agreed to a new deal and won’t be coming home anytime soon.
Lewis Ferguson, a midfielder for Scotland, has signed a new contract with Bologna that would keep him with the team until June 2028, with an additional year’s option. The 25-year-old has already secured two contract extensions since moving to the Serie A team from Aberdeen in 2022 for £3 million.
Ferguson won the Bulgarelli Number 8 Award for Serie A’s finest midfielder after having a fantastic season in which he scored six goals and dishevelled five assists to help Bologna qualify for the Champions League for the first time.
However, Ferguson missed the entire Nations League season due to an ACL injury in April, which also terminated his season early and prevented him from representing Scotland at Euro 2024.
The former Hamilton Accies player was connected to some of Italy’s top teams before being sidelined, including Juventus, who is currently managed by former Bologna manager Thiago Motta.
Ferguson only made his comeback to action this month, playing twice off the bench, including his Champions League debut at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in a 1-0 loss to Monaco.
When Bologna visits Lazio on Sunday and hosts LOSC Lille of France in the Champions League on Wednesday, he will be vying to start the first game of his comeback.
“Bologna FC 1909 can confirm that Lewis Ferguson has struck a new contract until June 30, 2028, with an option for an extension for an additional year,” the club said in a statement.
