According to SNL 24 Soccer, Rangers are pursuing Orlando Pirates player Relebohile Mofokeng as Barcelona initiates contact.
On December 2, the South African publication stated that Barcelona had asked about the 20-year-old midfielder’s availability due to interest from the Gers and Spanish team Levante [The Sun, May 18].
Having scored 10 goals from midfield in 58 appearances for the Pirates, Mofokeng has already completed a trial stint with Premier League team Wolves and is predicted to reach the top.
The Rangers might make a big statement with the transfer of Relebohile Mofokeng.
It would be a huge coup for the Gers to beat off teams like Barcelona (although their B-team), Levante, and Wolves for Mofokeng’s signing, and they could even be able to provide something that the other three can’t.
Naturally, it is regular first-team playtime, and given the level of competition, Mofokeng is unlikely to make an appearance in the starting lineups of Wolves, Levante, and particularly Barcelona anytime soon.
For an offensive midfielder who is only five feet three in height, the Premier League and La Liga would be enormous and possibly unbeatable steps up from the South African Premiership.
Undoubtedly, the Scottish Premiership is also a physically demanding competition, but as Hamza Igamane has demonstrated since joining Govan from FAR Rabat in Morocco, the distance from Africa’s top leagues is manageable.
Mofokeng joining Igamane at Ibrox may be a wise move for the Light Blues. Igamane’s success, which includes three goals in as many European games for the Gers, can serve as a model for any player travelling from Africa to Europe.
