A Yahoo Sport Australia poll involving over 38,000 readers has revealed a shift in public opinion regarding the Brisbane Broncos’ captaincy for 2025.

Despite new coach Michael Maguire dismissing the possibility of replacing Adam Reynolds as skipper, discussions persist about Patrick Carrigan potentially stepping into the role.

The debate gained momentum mid-2024 following the Broncos’ shocking home loss to the Bulldogs. Club legend Gorden Tallis suggested Carrigan might be a better choice, and criticism of Reynolds’ leadership has lingered after the team finished the season in 12th place.

However, Maguire seems unlikely to make a change, and recent poll results indicate Reynolds remains the preferred choice among fans. While Carrigan initially led the poll, fans have shifted their stance, now favoring Reynolds with 42% of the vote compared to Carrigan’s 40%. Payne Haas secured 7%, Reece Walsh garnered 3%, and 8% of voters favored another candidate entirely. The results suggest Maguire may be prudent to retain Reynolds for one more season.

Gorden Tallis Questions Reynolds’ Leadership

In July, Tallis criticized Reynolds, stating, “The team is lacking leadership. Against the Bulldogs, someone needed to stand up, and Reynolds didn’t. He also couldn’t get them over the line in the 2023 grand final. If he’s not stepping up, it might be time to give Pat Carrigan a chance.” Tallis contrasted Reynolds’ performance with that of Allan Langer, who consistently rallied his teammates during critical moments.

Maguire and Carrigan Defend Reynolds

Maguire, however, defended Reynolds, saying, “I’ve worked with Adam for years, and he’s a proven winner. He’s led the team to significant achievements and remains a strong leader as long as he’s fit and healthy.”

Reynolds, set to retire after the 2025 season, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the captaincy, declaring he’s “100 percent” ready to continue. Carrigan also voiced his support for Reynolds, praising his influence on the club as “second to none.”

Maguire has also highlighted Haas’ leadership potential, suggesting he could be a future captain after Reynolds steps down. “Payne showed his leadership qualities during Origin, and I’ll definitely be calling on that experience here at the Broncos,” Maguire added.
