Borja Sainz has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2024/25 season, emerging as a standout performer for Norwich City even during their more challenging moments.

The 23-year-old winger has already notched an impressive 15 goals and 2 assists in 18 Championship matches, shining brightly on the left flank.

However, despite his strong performances, concerns about his future at Carrow Road are growing as the January transfer window approaches. Football League World has analyzed Sainz’s transfer situation, the potential impact of his departure on Norwich, his personal stance, and his manager Johannes Hoff Thorup’s perspective on the matter.

Sainz reportedly open to leaving Norwich

Reports from Gala Haber suggest that Sainz is open to a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. While no formal bid has been made, the winger may be tempted to reunite with former teammate Gabriel Sara, who joined Galatasaray in the summer.

Norwich have reportedly placed a €22m (£18.2m) price tag on Sainz, signaling their desire to retain him. However, conflicting reports from England claim the club has no plans to let him go in January. With only 18 months remaining on his contract, Norwich face a dilemma: cash in now or risk losing leverage later.

Athletic Bilbao also expressed interest in September, and with clubs of this stature circling, retaining Sainz will be a significant challenge.

Thorup expresses concern over losing Sainz

Sainz has been an integral part of Thorup’s system, featuring in every match this season and playing a pivotal role in Norwich’s push for a play-off spot. However, Thorup has acknowledged the financial and strategic realities facing the club.

Following Norwich’s 6-1 thrashing of Plymouth Argyle, Thorup admitted he isn’t looking forward to the January window. He highlighted the importance of preparing younger players to step up should key figures like Sainz move on.

“He’s elevated his game to another level,” Thorup said. “We’ve structured our play to support him in those areas, and he’s shown his individual quality. If he moves to a bigger stage, we need to ensure the next player is ready, or we’ve failed in our planning.”

Losing Sainz would be a significant blow for Norwich

Fans are understandably eager for the club to hold onto Sainz, whose contributions have been crucial to their campaign. With two hat-tricks this season—against Derby County and Plymouth—Sainz has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to decide matches single-handedly.

Replacing his goal-scoring prowess would be a daunting task, especially mid-season. Thorup’s quick implementation of his style has benefited Sainz immensely, but if the winger departs, Norwich’s promotion ambitions could take a serious hit.
