Following Foxes’ comeback, a former England player makes a statement.
After Jamie Vardy scored another goal in an incredible comeback over the weekend, retired Premier League player Jermain Defoe said that he wanted Leicester City to be relegated this season.
Vardy added three assists to his six league goals this season in the Foxes’ thrilling draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two late goals.
With the goal against the Seagulls in the 86th minute, the 37-year-old now stands 15th in the all-time scoring statistics with an incredible 142 Premier League goals in 321 games.
Defoe, a former striker for Portsmouth, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur, is only 20 goals behind that total and now in 10th place.
To keep his place among the top ten Premier League goal scorers of all time, Defoe quipped on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that he would want to see Leicester relegated.
“Well…” was the 42-year-old’s response when Jamie Carragher asked if he would.
He laughed and added, “I’m holding on to that top ten.”
Vardy, Defoe’s adversary, has been playing really well so far this season, contributing nine goals in 14 league games—which is surprising given his advanced age.
The striker only made his debut in England’s top division in the 2014–15 season, but he was the number nine when the Foxes accomplished one of the greatest sporting feats in history and won the Premier League in 2016. As he attempts to help keep Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team from relegation in his ninth season in the world’s finest league, his 142 goals are all the more astonishing given his advanced age.
