The former Manchester United executive is set to begin his role with a busy agenda.
Barry Ferguson has urged incoming Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart and the club’s board to prioritize appointing a new chairman. The Ibrox legend believes this should take precedence over securing “new money” from investors, as he hopes for greater stability behind the scenes.
Stewart, who previously held a senior role at Manchester United, will officially assume his position next week, following Rangers’ clash with Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final. He will succeed James Bisgrove, with reports from England suggesting his responsibilities will include attracting fresh investment. Ferguson noted that interim chairman John Gilligan is already working toward securing additional funds.
Speaking to Go Radio, Ferguson said, “It’s clear they are actively seeking new investment for the club. The board has been transparent about this, and hopefully, in the coming months, new funding will come in to benefit the club, not just on the field but also behind the scenes, which is crucial.”
When asked about Stewart’s role in the ongoing restructuring at Ibrox, Ferguson added, “He starts on Monday. He has an impressive CV, having spent several years at Manchester United. The next step is to appoint a new chairman. It’s taken some time, but credit to John Gilligan for ensuring the process is thorough and that the right person is selected for the role.”
