Graham Roberts, a former Rangers defender, isn’t sure Philippe Clement is the best candidate to take the Gers back to the top.

Although he has shown sympathy for Rangers manager Philippe Clement, Graham Roberts doesn’t think he can lead the team back to its former success.

Clement has guided Rangers to four straight wins across all competitions, cutting the gap with second-place Aberdeen to just two points and improving their chances in the Europa League, despite a difficult time during which there were calls for his dismissal due to subpar performances against Aberdeen and Dundee United.

Roberts, a former Rangers champion, is doubtful of Clement’s ability to lead the team to Scotland’s top once again, especially with a pivotal game against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham at Ibrox and the Scottish League Cup final against bitter rivals Celtic coming up. “I am not,” Roberts acknowledged in an interview with Simon Jordan on talkSPORT. He has, in my opinion, had to learn the hard way. To be honest, he is up against it because the club hasn’t given him a lot of money to spend.

“I believe Celtic turned a profit of £60 million last year, and Rangers aren’t even close to that. The issue he faces is that if they don’t win the league, they will fall far behind Celtic for the next five or six years. “After watching Rangers and thinking they were mediocre, I would have predicted Tottenham would have won if it had been four weeks ago. However, they have improved. I’m going to aim for 1-1 and remain undecided.

“With the personnel he has, they have improved in the previous four or five games, scoring 14 goals and giving up one goal, despite starting out slowly. He has the essentials down pat. However, I’m not sure he’s the right man for the Rangers right now.

However, Roberts has adopted a more upbeat attitude and supported the Gers in achieving a successful result in tonight’s game. He said that Postecoglou’s formidable injury list provides the Light Blues a good chance of securing a draw, based on his own experience prior to joining Rangers, where he won two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup with Spurs.
