Bill Leckie has suggested that Cyriel Dessers’ time at Rangers could be nearing its end after his controversial decision during Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final against Celtic.
With the match tied 3-3 after extra time, penalties were required to determine the winner. Celtic ultimately prevailed 5-4 in the shootout, but it was Dessers’ choice not to take one of Rangers’ five spot-kicks, despite goalkeeper Jack Butland volunteering for one, that raised eyebrows.
Writing in The Scottish Sun on December 16, Leckie called the situation “unbelievable and unforgivable,” highlighting the striker’s failure to step up in a moment of high pressure. “We’re talking about a centre-forward being on the pitch for a cup final shootout – but leaving the fifth kick to his keeper,” Leckie remarked. “Even at the height of a dramatic showdown like this, it felt like a plot twist too far.”
Leckie questioned Dessers’ purpose on the field, adding: “Why else does a manager bring his No.9 off the bench in extra-time if not to win him the game? What else is he there for but to put the ball in the net?”
A Strained Relationship with Rangers Fans
Dessers has already faced criticism from the Ibrox faithful due to his inconsistent performances since joining the club. His decision to avoid penalty-taking responsibilities in such a pivotal match has only exacerbated tensions, further alienating supporters.
For a striker whose role is to deliver goals, deferring to the goalkeeper for such a critical moment was perceived as a failure of leadership and confidence. The incident has cast doubt on both his mental toughness and his commitment to the team during high-stakes situations.
Given the growing backlash, Dessers’ future at Rangers looks uncertain. A January exit could be on the horizon as the club and player may seek to move on from a relationship that now appears irreparably damaged.
