Rangers have sought answers from the Scottish FA following their controversial penalty denial during the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden on Sunday, as reported by Rangers Review.

According to the outlet’s website on Monday (16 December), one of Patrick Stewart’s first actions as the club’s new CEO was to contact the FA and referees’ chief Willie Collum.

The Gers are demanding clarification after VAR official Alan Muir failed to intervene and award a penalty when Celtic’s Liam Scales pulled Vaclav Cerny down near the edge of the box during extra time in their 15 December defeat.

The incident occurred in the first half of extra time with the match level at 3-3. Brendan Rodgers’ side eventually secured victory, winning 5-4 on penalties.

Stewart Takes Immediate Action as Rangers CEO

Stewart, whose appointment as Rangers CEO was announced in November, officially began his role on 16 December after the club’s matches against Tottenham and Celtic [The Herald]. However, the controversy at Hampden meant he had to dive straight into his duties.

It remains to be seen how the Scottish FA will respond to Rangers’ concerns about the penalty incident.

With both Mohamed Diomande and Vaclav Cerny unable to continue into the second half of extra time, the Gers struggled to maintain momentum. Many will speculate whether the match outcome could have been different had VAR awarded the penalty.

Captain James Tavernier, despite criticism this season, would have been expected to convert from the spot under pressure. Instead, Philippe Clement’s side saw their League Cup defence come to an end.

Rangers will look to bounce back as they host Dundee FC at Ibrox on Saturday (21 December).
