West Ham, Southampton, and Norwich City Target Exeter City Prospect Ed James
West Ham, Southampton, and Norwich City are reportedly showing interest in Exeter City’s rising star Ed James, as per Football Insider. The 19-year-old defender, currently on loan at Yeovil Town in the National League, has impressed during his spell with the Glovers, drawing attention from clubs higher up the football pyramid.
James, tipped for a bright future, remains under contract with Exeter until the summer of 2026, ensuring the club isn’t under immediate pressure to sell. The teenager is expected to return to Exeter in January after completing his loan stint at Huish Park.
The latest reports suggest both West Ham and Southampton are eyeing a move for the promising defender this winter. Southampton, meanwhile, are also in the midst of searching for a new manager following Russell Martin’s departure. Norwich City, currently sitting 12th in the Championship, are also said to be monitoring the situation.
A Career on the Rise
James has spent his entire career at Exeter City, progressing through the academy ranks and representing the club at various youth levels. The Exeter-born defender made his senior debut in October 2022 during an EFL Trophy match against Southampton’s U21s and has since made seven first-team appearances, three of which came this season.
To gain valuable experience, James has completed loan spells at several clubs, including Saltash United, Weymouth, Tiverton Town, Weston-super-Mare, and Dorchester Town. Last month, he joined Yeovil Town on loan to further his development.
What’s Next for James?
Exeter City will need to decide James’ future when he returns in January. While interest from Premier League and Championship clubs like West Ham, Southampton, and Norwich City is growing, it remains to be seen whether any of them will make a formal bid for the defender.
Meanwhile, Exeter, who lost 2-1 to Barnsley over the weekend, will face Burton Albion in their next league outing as they continue their League One campaign.
