Collum seeks solutions to quell backlash over Hampden penalty controversy.
Neil Lennon has called for Willie Collum to oversee VAR for the upcoming Rangers vs. Celtic clash amid mounting scrutiny on the SFA.
The Head of Refereeing Operations has faced intense criticism after the VAR team failed to award a late penalty to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup final. The decision, which involved Liam Scales bringing down Vaclav Cerny in the box, was labeled “unacceptable” by Collum. Celtic eventually secured the trophy in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
The Key Match Incident panel also condemned the error, describing it as “a straightforward decision all officials should get right.” Following the controversy, Lennon believes Collum’s presence in the VAR room at Ibrox on January 2 could help alleviate pressure on the officials.
Collum retired from on-field refereeing last season to take on a senior role at Hampden, but Lennon suggests his involvement in such a high-stakes game is necessary. Speaking to PLZ, Lennon said:
“If Willie is the head of referees, shouldn’t he be involved in a match of this magnitude? Either Willie or someone of senior standing at the SFA. He’s already criticized the officials responsible for the mistake.
“Given his experience and understanding of the game, he’d be the ideal person to oversee decisions. The referee for the Old Firm clash will be under immense scrutiny, so they need the best support possible. Having Willie in the VAR department would ensure the right calls are made.”
