According to Alan Hutton, Cyriel Dessers’ desire to take a penalty in the Scottish League Cup final could lead to a lot of problems for Rangers.
The striker received a lot of criticism after his team lost to Celtic on Sunday, December 15, after he was not one of the five penalty takers.
Under Philippe Clement, the 30-year-old has fallen out of favour, and some have said that the manager ought to have given an explanation for his penalty judgement.
“A person was messaging as well and saying it was poor of him not to articulate that it was his decision,” Michael Stewart stated in response to the incident on the Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club [23 December, 35:00].
“However, if the manager were to publicly state, ‘Look, I made the decision,’ what would happen next? You believe that Jack Butland and Yilmaz are a better option than your primary number nine striker?”
“You’re opening up a can of worms a wee bit,” Hutton said in response.

Dessers’ decline in the Ibrox hierarchy was evident, but this wasn’t shocking because 22-year-old Hamza Igamane began to play with remarkable intensity.
But it appears that there is more to this case than that, as Clement appears to have trusted a goalie to take a penalty kick before his own number nine.
The striker has been under fire for not stepping up for a spot-kick following the penalty loss in the League Cup final, so it seems odd that the manager would not address it if that was his choice.
However, as Hutton points out, this would undoubtedly cause problems because it appears that there is more involved than just favouring a younger, more successful attacker over the 30-year-old.
Dessers has been linked to a move away from Ibrox, and with the January transfer window drawing near, this could be the best course of action for everyone involved.
