When Rangers star Jack Butland decided to rush out of his box and give St Mirren a penalty in their 2-1 loss in Paisley, Scott Allan chastised him for a moment of “absolute madness.”
When one of the Gers’ numerous offensive runs broke down, the Saints launched a counterattack, and the goalie mistimed his attempt to grab the ball.
Oisin Smyth gave Stephen Robinson’s team the first goal from the next penalty, and the Ibrox team was behind from the very end.
Allan, a former Celtic player who is now a commentator, discussed his thoughts on Butland’s role in the opening goal on BBC Sportscene on December 26.
“It’s shocking, the indecision, and I honestly still can’t decide why he did that,” Allan remarked.
“A moment of complete insanity.”
Jack Butland must prevent these kinds of errors from becoming commonplace at Rangers.
Butland has been one of the Gers’ standout players for the majority of the season, frequently keeping them in games and scoring points.
With the way things have occasionally gone at Ibrox this season, you can never be sure what to anticipate, even though his performance against St Mirren might have merely been a bump in the road.
Despite only being with the club for a short while, the Englishman has developed into something of a cult icon since arriving in Glasgow last summer.
Things are currently looking less and less promising for Philippe Clement and his team, and it is clear that their prospects of winning the title are decreasing daily.
Rangers’ ability to bounce back from their loss will only be known in time, but if they do, Butland must start right away and not let his error against the Saints depress him.
