Sunderland has had an incredible start to 2025, defeating promotion rivals Sheffield United in an exciting match on Wearside on New Year’s Day.

After the Blades defeated Sunderland 1-0 in the rematch earlier in the season, it was anticipated that Sunderland would have a difficult time playing Sheffield United at home in their first match of 2025.

However, the team led by Regis Le Bris prevailed this time. Eliezer Mayenda was praised for both scoring and assisting on the other goal as Sunderland defeated Sheffield United 2-1 in one of their greatest games of the season.

The Black Cats must divide their attention and emphasis between the January transfer market and the forthcoming league games.

The market is up for business, and it appears like the Black Cats need one or two new players to provide them the resources they need to keep up their promotion push.

Glen Kamara is one name that has recently been linked.

At Rennes, the door is now open for Sunderland to sign Glen Kamara.

Kamara at Rennes has been linked to Sunderland in the lead-up to January. After just one season at Elland Road, the Finnish international secured an £8.4 million transfer to Ligue 1 after making it to the Championship play-off final with Leeds United the previous season.

Premier League teams have also been connected to him, suggesting that he has a broad interest in England. It was said before the year that Kamara was a target for Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Since Kamara has only made two substitute appearances in Rennes’ last four games this season and has 13 league appearances in 2024–2025, the door may now be open for Ipswich, Southampton, and of course Sunderland to go in on him.
