After signing Jamie McCart on a pre-contract agreement, Hearts have agreed to a transfer price with Rotherham United, and the defender is currently in route to Tynecastle.
The clubs have advanced in their negotiations for a speedy agreement, and McCart, 27, is now getting ready to leave for Edinburgh.
According to information obtained by The Edinburgh News, Hearts will pay the English League One team £70,000 to recruit the player now rather than waiting until the summer. Due to injuries to Frankie Kent and Stephen Kingsley, as well as Kye Rowles’ impending £600,000 move to America, they require defensive reinforcements.
McCart was willing to stay in England for the remainder of the season until his Rotherham contract ended, having agreed to terms on a pre-contract with the Tynecastle club. After talks this afternoon, that changed, and now there are just a few loose ends to wrap up and a cost agreed upon. Once in Edinburgh, McCart will sign a long-term deal.
He is a left-footed centre back who is nearing the end of his playing days, and Hearts think he can improve their defensive options. He is prepared to quit Rotherham, an English League One team, despite having made 21 appearances this season, including 16 starts.
Prior to stints at St Johnstone and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, McCart progressed through Celtic’s junior system. He is now ready to add Hearts to his resume after winning the League Cup and Scottish Cup at McDiarmid Park in the 2020–21 season.
Since the January transfer window started on Wednesday, the Edinburgh club has already acquired Belgian attacker Elton Kabangu on loan from Union Saint-Gilloise.
