It’s possible that Kristjaan Speakman might think about loaning out a Premier League player who knows a Sunderland star.
Even if several positions may need some reinforcements, it is unlikely that the Black Cats will make many additions during the January transfer window.
Sunderland, who sustained a number of injuries during the 2024–25 Championship campaign, have been extremely unfortunate this season.
Regis Le Bris has found it challenging to cope with the injury absences of players like Romaine Mundle, Chris Rigg, and Tommy Watson, who have contributed more than 25% of the Black Cats’ goals this season.
Sunderland is also lacking defensively, although the loan addition of a Man United full-back with a lot of potential should increase the Black Cats’ alternatives.
Harry Amass, a Chris Rigg teammate and full-back for Man United, might join Sunderland in January.
Leo Fuhr Hjelde and Dennis Cirkin are the only left-back alternatives available to Le Bris at the moment. Luke O’Nien has also been used in that position on occasion this season, but having other options in the area would undoubtedly help.
Kristjaan Speakman’s focus may therefore shift to Harry Amass, a full-back for Manchester United who is apparently available for loan, according to The Mirror, with Ruben Amorim providing the heads-up.
Although it is anticipated that the defender, who was referred to as a “big talent” by former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag, according to The Guardian, will be in high demand, Sunderland may have an advantage because he has played 20 games with Black Cats star Rigg, with the two playing together from the 2021–2022 season until the current campaign as part of the England youth setup.
Young January additions may benefit from Regis Le Bris and the Black Cats’ reputation.
Given what the Black Cats can give these young players, Sunderland may be well-positioned to attract some big names by entering the nascent Premier League loan market, which appears to be very low risk but great reward.
It is undeniable that Le Bris has been outstanding in his brief stay thus far in developing young players and bringing out the best in them while also giving them playing time. The Premier League teams, notably Man United with Amass, will take notice of this and may decide that Wearside is the ideal place for young people.
Over the past few years, Sunderland’s emphasis on young players has paid off well, and it may continue to contribute in recruiting this January window.
