According to Sabre Desfarges, Rangers are interested in signing Marseille’s Bamo Meite this month.
The journalist, who works for the French television network TF1, stated on January 5 via his personal X account that both Montpellier and the Light Blues are interested in signing the young centre-back on a “dry” loan.
Marseille wants to include a buyout clause or obligation in any loan arrangement, but they are willing to let Meite go during the current January transfer window.
According to Desfarges, Meite has a “release voucher” to depart from the Ligue 1 powerhouses.
Following the injury to Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Philippe Clement is considering Bamo Meite.
Meite is a centre back with a right foot who can also play right back.
The fact that Neraysho Kasanwirjo was loaned from Feyenoord shows how much Philippe Clement values adaptability in his players.
Before sustaining an injury setback in November, Kasanwirjo played for the Glasgow Giants in all four positions.
Rangers’ interest in signing Meite on a straight loan deal is understandable given that the Dutchman is still a long way from returning to full health.
It is unclear, though, if Nils Koppen will be able to persuade Marseille to soften their position on the terms of the deal.
The Ivorian made the transfer permanent last summer after spending the 2023–24 season on loan with the Ligue 1 team.
However, Meite has struggled to get playing time at Marseille this season, as Roberto De Zerbi has only allowed him to play 24 minutes in Ligue 1.
He might take Kasanwirjo’s place at Rangers for the second half of the season if all goes as planned.
