Fabrizio Romano has revealed Serie A side Udinese are likely to sign Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik on a free transfer, amid claims that Norwich City could be interested in bringing him to Carrow Road in the January transfer window.
With his contract at Norwegian team FK Haugesund set to expire after their season ended earlier this month, the 27-year-old may have been in line for a move to the Canaries, according to reports from Alan Nixon via his Patreon account.
Selvik’s contract with Haugesund is set to expire at the end of 2024, thus a move with a new challenge appears to be imminent. But with Romano’s revelation, Norwich will certainly lose out to Udinese in the competition for his services.
It’s a setback for the Canaries, and it appears increasingly probable that Angus Gunn will depart Carrow Road given the apparent impasse over his contract. Johannes Hoff Thorup has expressed interest in the Norwegian goalie, so that might happen as early as January.
Details about Fabrizio Romano Norwich is interested in Egil Selvik’s transfer switch.
According to Romano, Udinese and Selvik are now in talks, and the goalie has also received bids from Belgium and Spain.
After playing in Norway for his entire career at the age of 27, there is no indication that Norwich will make him an offer; instead, Serie A may be his next stop.
Recently, Selvik announced that he was leaving Haugesund due to interest from an unidentified Championship team, which Nixon said was thought to be Norwich.
Norwich might require a custodian come January.
A custodian may be required in January, and missing out on Selvik would be a blow given that George Long did not perform well during his stint covering Gunn’s injury earlier in the season and that young player Archie Mair has not yet experienced football at a level above League Two.
Norwich needs to strengthen their defence, and adding a new custodian who might have more control over his backline will help them do so. Gunn’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, even though Hoff Thorup told the Pink Un in October that talks are “always ongoing” with him.
This season, Norwich has been inconsistent, which is problematic given how frequently they switch goals and chop. Since Selvik is a year younger than Gunn, the club would not have suffered a significant financial loss if he had been brought in for free.
It’s interesting to note that Watford has also been mentioned as needing a custodian this month. The goalie may soon play Championship football against the Canaries because Udinese and Watford are owned by the same entity. If Norwich wants another option in goal this month, they might have to look elsewhere.
