Niko Katic is reportedly keen on a return to Rangers during the current transfer window, with his agent initiating discussions, according to the Daily Record.
The newspaper’s online report (7 January) revealed that the Zurich defender’s representatives have started conversations about his future, with Katic expressing a strong preference for rejoining the Scottish club.
Philippe Clement, whose position as Rangers manager remains uncertain, will likely prioritize squad reinforcements in January to boost the team’s performance in the second half of the season. The Daily Record described Katic as “desperate” to return to Rangers in their headline covering the story.
A source close to the player’s representatives told the Record: “We’ve had nothing concrete yet, but we’ve seen stories in the media, and of course, Niko would love to return to Rangers. We are in talks with a few clubs, including one in England. However, if Rangers approach us, that would be Nikola’s priority. He still has 18 months left on his contract at Zurich, but if a return to Rangers is meant to happen, he’ll be there.”
A Return to Ibrox for Katic?
As the January window unfolds, Clement is expected to identify key targets, with the 28-year-old Katic potentially positioning himself as an option.
Katic’s time at Rangers ended on a challenging note due to a serious ACL injury that eventually led to his departure. However, he has since revitalized his career, making 18 appearances in the Swiss Super League this season.
With Rangers currently facing defensive shortages due to injuries to key players like James Tavernier and John Souttar, Katic’s return could address multiple issues. His familiarity with the club, as well as his experience during a successful period for Rangers, might make him an ideal addition to Clement’s squad.
