Chris Rigg, who made his Sunderland debut two years ago today, is currently regarded as one of Regis Le Bris’ greatest players.

Chris Rigg is among the most exciting of Sunderland’s many outstanding young players, and the team has a long history of creating them.

It’s difficult to believe the 17-year-old is still a vital member of Regis Le Bris’ squad as they aim for promotion in the Championship this season.

Although it should come as no surprise that Premier League teams are interested in Rigg, Sunderland supporters are currently content to reminisce about his two years of fame.

On his debut, Chris Rigg made history for Sunderland.

On Tuesday, January 7, Sunderland’s official Twitter account announced that it had been two years to the day that Rigg made his senior debut for the first team in the FA Cup match against Shrewsbury Town.

“This day in 2023, Chris Rigg became our youngest-ever outfield player, making history,” they stated.

By substituting Edouard Michut in the 81st minute at the age of 15 years, 6 months, and 20 days, Rigg cemented his place in Sunderland history. In terms of youngest debuts, Rigg is only surpassed by custodian Derek Forster, who made his debut in the 1960s.

One Sunderland supporter commented on the original post, saying: “What a fantastic moment for Chris Rigg and Sunderland AFC! Glad to witness such youthful brilliance creating history. Cheers to many more achievements in the future.

“That goal two years ago was celebrated by Chris Rigg, Luke O’Nien, Dan Ballard, Jobe Bellingham, Jack Clarke, Patrick Roberts, Dan Neil, and Amad Diallo,” another joked. We haven’t yet won the Champions League, criminal.

“What a player,” wrote one admirer of Rigg, while another recalled the “immediate impact” he had in helping force a corner that resulted in Sunderland’s equaliser that evening, before a thrilling late winner sealed the Black Cats’ tie.

Chris Rigg’s potential is limitless, and he will continue to improve.

The way the past two years have unfolded for Rigg, who is currently among the Championship’s most prized players and is being pursued by many elite Premier League clubs, is incredible.

Fortunately, Rigg downplayed rumours of leaving Sunderland, and he will be crucial to the Black Cats’ prospects of winning promotion this year once he recovers from his injury.

Even though Rigg is having a fantastic season so far, at just 17, he still has a lot more to offer. This is both frightening and thrilling for Sunderland supporters.

In another two years, who knows where Rigg will be? The Premier League, most likely, although it’s unclear if he’ll be there with Sunderland.
