Rangers would consider Ryan Porteous in the transfer market since the defender is on Watford’s fringes, according to Craig Moore.
Moore made the case on the GoRadio Football Show on January 8 that Porteous, who began his career with Hibernian, would be ideally suited for a return to the Premiership if he were to depart Vicarage Road this month.
Porteous appears to be leaving Watford [HullLive, 8 January], but Sheffield United and Hull City are both interested, so the Bears will have to compete to recruit a player that former teammate Darren McGregor called “phenomenal” [Edinburgh Evening News, December 2018].
Moore stated: “He knows the domestic game inside and out,” according to remarks from the Daily Record (9 January). I would definitely take those players into consideration if he weren’t playing for Watford.
“If they don’t get any playing time in the south.” It’s not an awful choice. Up here, we’re sure he’d be all right.
“He won’t encounter anything that he doesn’t know about. He has witnessed and felt it. I’m very certain the Rangers will consider him as one of a few choices.
Rangers can strengthen their defence by acquiring Ryan Porteous.
When it comes to his next move, Porteous seems to have a lot of options because three sizable clubs are vying for his services. However, each club will present unique advantages and disadvantages for the 25-year-old this month.
Similar to the Light Blues, Sheffield United is currently beset by injuries, but as they are being strongly favoured to win promotion, Porteous might not be in the lineup for very long.
Although Porteous would probably receive a lot of playing time as a result of Hull’s relegation struggle at the opposite end of the Championship table, he might not want to take the chance of falling to the third division.
But with the Gers in dire need of central defensive reinforcements this month due to a string of injuries, a move to Ibrox might provide the twelve-capped Scotland player the best of both worlds.
John Souttar and one of Robin Propper, Leon Balogun, or Porteous will be in the backline after he returns from his own layoff, offering lots of competition and maybe long bench stints.
But since Propper has never truly impressed in a Light Blue jersey and Balogun is 36 and out of contract, Ibrox would be the ideal place for Porteous to find his “phenomenal” potential.
