Victor Orta and the Rise of Mateusz Bogusz After Leeds United Exit

Celtic and Lazio Eye Player Sold by Leeds for Under £1M in 2023
By Will Butcher – January 15, 2025

Victor Orta, Leeds United’s former sporting director, stepped down in April 2023, just weeks before the club’s relegation under Sam Allardyce. Orta’s final transfer window, considered disastrous by many, included signings like Max Wober, Weston McKennie, and Georginio Rutter. Leeds desperately needed a proven Premier League striker but instead brought in Rutter, who struggled with language barriers. Wober performed decently but left that summer, and McKennie’s loan stint was forgettable.

After Leeds sacked Jesse Marsch, effectively admitting the mistake of replacing Marcelo Bielsa with him, Orta departed following a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth. Yet, one of his last deals—a low-cost transfer—has surprised many.

Celtic and Lazio Interested in Mateusz Bogusz
Mateusz Bogusz, once a promising talent at Leeds, struggled during his time in Europe, including an underwhelming loan at Ibiza. However, in March 2023, Leeds sold the Polish midfielder to MLS side LAFC for under £1 million. This move marked a turning point in his career.

Bogusz has since thrived in the MLS, recording 43 goals and assists in 90 games, including 33 contributions in 48 matches during the 2024 season. His standout performances have caught the attention of Celtic, managed by Brendan Rodgers, and Serie A side Lazio.

Bogusz’s Journey in Numbers

Since joining LAFC, Bogusz has become a key player and earned two caps for Poland. His success in the MLS, highlighted by leading LAFC’s attack before Olivier Giroud’s arrival, demonstrates his growth.

As Bogusz eyes a potential return to European football, his decision to leave Leeds for the MLS has proven transformative, reviving a once uncertain career.
