Rangers are reportedly closing in on signing Lille defender Rafael Fernandes, as per The Scottish Sun.
The outlet revealed on 17 January via X that the 22-year-old is being closely monitored by the Ibrox club during the current transfer window.
However, even if Fernandes completes his move in time for Rangers’ clash against Manchester United on 23 January, he will be ineligible to play, as the European squad list cannot be adjusted until the league phase concludes.
Rafael Fernandes: A Potential Boost for Rangers
Securing Fernandes would add depth and quality to Rangers’ defence, which has been stretched due to injuries.
At just 22, Fernandes is a promising centre-back with experience in Portugal’s top flight during his spell at Arouca before joining Lille. While he has yet to make a first-team appearance for the French club, interest from other Ligue 1 sides highlights his potential.
His arrival could bring stability and increased competition to the backline, potentially raising the defensive unit’s overall performance for the second half of the season.
Still, Nils Koppen must carefully evaluate whether Fernandes can significantly improve the starting lineup, as signing him without a clear benefit might not be the best move.
If Fernandes isn’t the solution, it is crucial for Rangers to secure a high-quality defender before the transfer window closes in February.
