Austrian center-back Michael Steinwender has officially joined Hearts from Swedish side IFK Värnamo.
The 24-year-old has signed a contract until 2028 following a six-figure transfer agreement between the clubs. He will now await a work permit before beginning his career in Scotland.
Steinwender was scouted through Hearts’ collaboration with Jamestown Analytics, a sports recruitment firm assisting the club in identifying promising talent. This approach has already facilitated the signings of Belgian forward Elton Kabangu and Scottish defender Jamie McCart. Steinwender is expected to become a valuable addition at Tynecastle Park in the coming years.
Known for his pace and aggressive defensive style, Steinwender boasts over 100 top-flight appearances across Austria and Sweden. He began his career with Austrian clubs Mattersburg, St. Pölten, and Hartberg before joining Värnamo in 2024, where he played a key role in their successful fight against relegation in the Allsvenskan. Despite interest from Danish teams, he opted to continue his career in Edinburgh.
Hearts head coach Neil Critchley expressed his excitement about the signing: “We’re delighted to finalize Michael’s transfer. It has taken a lot of effort from everyone at the club over the past few months to make this happen.
“Michael is a player we’ve carefully identified as having the qualities to thrive in the Scottish Premiership and on the European stage. With several seasons of experience in Austria and Sweden, he has great potential to further develop at just 24 years old.
“We’re pleased with the progress made in strengthening the squad this January and are eager to work with Michael moving forward.”
