Nikola Katic’s move away from FC Zurich is causing frustration for his manager, Ricardo Moniz, amid delays in sealing his transfer, according to Bosnian outlet Reprezentacija.

The report, dated 20 January, highlights that Katic, who played for Rangers from 2018 to 2022, was “promised” a move this winter. However, Moniz’s patience is running thin as the 28-year-old defender’s “picky” approach to deciding his next step prolongs the process.

Katic is eager to leave Zurich before the 3 February deadline and has been linked with a return to Rangers [Keith Jackson, 8 January]. Speaking to Reprezentacija, Moniz stated, “He’s very picky. He has one drawback, time is running out, and he doesn’t train.”

Katic’s Potential Return to Rangers

The situation at Zurich appears to be deteriorating, but the delay could pave the way for a Rangers reunion. With the club seeking defensive reinforcements this transfer window, Katic’s return could fill a pressing need.

Although Rafael Fernandes has joined on loan from Lille, he is likely a direct replacement for Feyenoord loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo, meaning further depth is still required. John Souttar, who was a standout performer before sustaining a hamstring injury against Tottenham, remains sidelined, leaving the door open for Katic to step in as a temporary solution.

The Bosnian international endured significant injury struggles during his previous spell at Ibrox, including an ACL tear that kept him out for over a year and saw him miss the club’s unbeaten title-winning campaign in 2020-21. However, a return could provide him the opportunity to prove he has unfinished business in Glasgow.

For Rangers fans, Katic’s return would not only bolster Philippe Clement’s defensive options but also revive a familiar face who could reignite his career and contribute to the team’s success.
