As the January transfer window draws to a close, Norwich City is hoping to hold onto their star winger Borja Sainz.

The Canaries have had a mixed season in the Championship thus far this year, struggling in recent weeks to reduce the gap to the play-off spots due to erratic performances and results.

At Carrow Road, expectations are usually high since many Yellows fans will probably consider a season that ends without a play-off finish to be unsatisfactory.

Since several of the team’s summer acquisitions haven’t performed well in the first half of the season, manager Johannes Hoff Thorup is under pressure to have a successful winter window this month.

Holding onto star player Sainz will undoubtedly help achieve that, but as the deadline of February 3 draws nearer, there is no assurance.

La Liga team Girona is interested in acquiring Borja Sainz.

Top talent can no longer be concealed in the Championship. The best football leagues in the globe will be well aware of a player’s success in the second division.

It is therefore not surprising that Sainz has been connected to a possible transfer to a major European league this month, as Girona, a Spanish La Liga team, is rumoured to be interested in the 23-year-old.

According to reports, it would cost them between €20 and €25 million (£16.9 and £21.10) if they wanted to buy him before the window closed. Norwich is reportedly open to offers for its star wide player, but only if the price is right.

joined on a free transfer from Giresunspor, a Turkish team, in July 2023 after the latter was relegated from Turkey’s first division due to a condition in his contract that allowed him to depart for nothing.

As a result, if Norwich were to acquire Sainz this month, they would earn greatly from the former Spanish junior player and would even be able to fund a lavish summer at Carrow Road.

Sainz must be sold by Norwich City immediately or not at all.

At this point in the January transfer window, clubs do not have the luxury of time to find a replacement for a player who is sold.

Given that a player of Sainz’s calibre and significance to the squad would undoubtedly need to be replaced if Norwich were to have a realistic chance of finishing in the top six in the second half of the season, they must now decide what they will do about his future this month.

With 15 goals going into matchday 28 of the season, Sainz is currently the leading scorer in the Championship even after being suspended for six games on January 10 for spitting during Norwich’s match against Sunderland on December 21.

That demonstrates his productivity for Norwich thus far this season and his significance for the club’s future, which will depend on whether he stays or leaves this month.

However, since time is running out, the Canaries will have to either sell and give themselves enough time to find a replacement—assuming one isn’t already lined up—or shut down Sainz’ shopfront.
