After Manchester United defeated Rangers 2-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday, Rio Ferdinand claimed that Bruno Fernandes would have an easy time in the Scottish Premiership, which infuriated Chris Sutton.

Former Chelsea star Jody Morris questioned Ferdinand on whether his old team would place in the top three of the Premiership after the Red Devils barely defeated the Glasgow giants in the UEFA Europa League on January 23.

After Matthijs de Ligt’s goal was disallowed, the United great, who was furious, responded well by claiming that Fernandes would score 112 goals every season in Scotland’s top division.

On January 23, Ferdinand posted on X, “Bruno [Fernandes] would score 112 goals a season up there.”

Sutton quickly responded to the former defender by joking that Manchester United would have a hard time against St. Mirren.

Sutton retorted, “St Mirren would defeat Manchester United with ease.”

Rangers proudly depart from Manchester United

Sutton, a former Celtic player, has a tendency to make fun of Rangers whenever they don’t get their way.

Even so, he would have been pleased with Philippe Clement and company’s performance on Thursday at Old Trafford.

For the most part, the Light Blues held their own against the Premier League’s biggest teams, losing only to an own goal from Jack Butland in the second half.

After Cyriel Dessers scored a late equaliser, Rangers were able to quiet the Old Trafford fans for a few solid minutes.

If it weren’t for Fernandes’ late, late victory, the Gers supporters in Manchester would have had a happy evening.

After Dessers had tied the score for the visitors, it was agonising to watch United take the lead again.

Rangers may, however, be proud of their performance since it represents Scottish football well.
