Rangers could reignite their interest in Morgan Whittaker after the Plymouth Argyle forward failed to show up for his team’s latest match.
Plymouth manager Miron Muslic revealed that Whittaker’s absence during their 5-0 home defeat to Burnley on Wednesday was unplanned, as the player did not report to Home Park despite being selected for the squad.
Whittaker’s actions echo the behavior of players seeking transfers, and with Rangers long linked to the 24-year-old, his recent no-show could spark renewed interest from Ibrox.
Speaking to the BBC (22 January), Muslic stated: “Morgan didn’t show up – we had a game today, and he was in the selection, but he wasn’t there. It shows the mentality or lack thereof. You have responsibilities, and you are under contract.”
Rangers should act swiftly on Whittaker pursuit
Although Whittaker’s absence coincides with reported interest from Championship side Burnley [BBC, 21 January], Rangers must seize the opportunity. The club has been searching for a wide forward with Whittaker’s skill set, as manager Philippe Clement continues to address issues on the left flank in key games.
Players like Nedim Bajrami and Ianis Hagi have been deployed out wide but are more suited to central roles, while left-backs Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte have been pushed into attacking positions. Whittaker could provide much-needed balance on the left, and while his transfer may be costly, offloading third-choice striker Cyriel Dessers could offset the expense.
Dessers, currently behind Hamza Igamane and Danilo in the pecking order, has been linked with a move away [Scottish Sun, 16 January], making space for Whittaker’s arrival a logical step. However, Whittaker’s attitude would need to be addressed immediately to ensure he aligns with the club’s values and expectations.
