Ally McCoist faced criticism from SNP MSP James Dornan for remarks made during Rangers’ Europa League loss to Manchester United, broadcast live on TNT Sports.

The Rangers legend praised the traveling supporters as “amazing” while sectarian chants could be heard from the away section at Old Trafford. During the match, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher remarked on the atmosphere created by the away fans, saying, “I’ll let you speak about them,” to which McCoist replied, “They’re amazing that lot.”

Dornan expressed his disapproval on X, stating: “Just heard everyone’s favourite football pundit, Super Ally, praising the Rangers fans just as they sing [expletive]. Only in Scotland is this acceptable.”

McCoist’s comments sparked debate, but the broader issue of sectarian chanting remains a significant concern in Scottish football, requiring more action from the authorities.

While McCoist’s remarks may seem ill-timed, it’s important to consider the context. As a TV pundit focused on the game, he may not have been fully aware of the chants being sung. Criticizing him for this risks diverting attention from the real issue.

Rangers delivered a commendable performance at Old Trafford, narrowly losing 2-1. Unfortunately, off-field controversies have overshadowed the match, but targeting McCoist seems unnecessarily harsh in this context.
