Italian news source TuttoMercatoWeb claims that Watford is “closing in” on a bid for Udinese custodian Egil Selvik.
The goalie was perceived by Watford as a stand-in for Daniel Bachmann, who was injured. Any last-minute tasks must be finished by the end of the January transfer window.
According to reporter Alan Nixon’s Patreon page, Selvik, 27, was coveted by Norwich City earlier this winter, but he ultimately decided against moving to Carrow Road. Even though he just joined Udinese this month, he is already being linked to leaving.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb’s most recent update on his condition, the Hornets are attempting to entice him to Vicarage Road. The due date is Monday, February 3.
After their most recent 2-1 loss away to Coventry City, Tom Cleverley’s team is currently in ninth place in the Championship standings and just three points outside of the play-offs.
Watford wants to hire Egil Selvik
Selvik’s contract at Haugesund terminated at the end of December and Udinese snatched him up, despite links to Norwich City.
After joining his old team in 2021, he became a vital member and their number one player.
Selvik might be able to provide Watford’s goalkeeping unit greater depth and competitiveness.
The Sandnes native made 120 appearances for Haugesund throughout all competitions, and in their most recent season, they came in 14th place out of 16 teams.
Selvik began his career with stints at Sandnes Ulf and Ganddal IL before making three appearances for the latter’s main squad as a young player.
In order to gain experience, he was also leased to Nest-Sotra.
When Odd picked him up in 2019, he stayed with them for a few years before leaving.
How does Watford fare now?
Given Bachmann’s absence, Watford would benefit from adding another custodian.
Myles Roberts and Jonathan Bond are currently their fit candidates to play. The latter just got back from a stint at Partick Thistle on loan.
Between now and the campaign’s conclusion, Selvik could perform a job.
Although it would be shocking to see him depart Udinese so quickly, there are undoubtedly connections between the Hornets and the Serie A team.
In an attempt to get back to winning ways, Watford will play their first game this weekend at home against Norwich City.
