Jon Rowe’s Marseille Loan Turns Sour After Struggles in France

Jon Rowe’s loan spell at Marseille from Norwich City hasn’t gone as hoped, with reports suggesting the forward has already fallen out of favor at the Ligue 1 club just months after his summer switch from Carrow Road.

According to L’Équipe, the 21-year-old could be on his way out of the French side earlier than expected, having failed to impress manager Roberto De Zerbi since joining six months ago. However, with the transfer window closed and no developments regarding his future, Rowe looks set to remain in France for now, especially with an obligation-to-buy clause reportedly included in the deal this summer.

To get a fan’s perspective, Football League World spoke with Norwich City supporter Zeke Downes, who shared his thoughts on Rowe’s situation and whether the move has paid off.

A Rocky Exit from Norwich City

Rowe’s departure from Norwich was marred by controversy. Once a fan favorite at Carrow Road, he quickly fell out of favor with supporters after refusing to be part of the matchday squad for the season opener against Cardiff City, amid transfer interest from abroad.

His loan to Marseille was soon finalized, with The Telegraph’s John Percy reporting a £13.5 million obligation-to-buy clause in the agreement. However, the move hasn’t gone as planned. Rowe has struggled for regular game time, starting just three league matches and making 14 substitute appearances under former Brighton boss De Zerbi.

Despite contributing four goals this season, rumors about his uncertain future have been circulating. Still, Downes believes there’s little sympathy for Rowe among the Norwich faithful.

“I’m not surprised that Marseille might not want to keep Jonathan Rowe, although I believe they have an obligation to buy,” Downes said. “It doesn’t seem like he’ll return to Norwich, as they’ll likely have to buy him and then move him on. I think he made a mistake—not necessarily in the move itself, but in how he handled it. Whether it was bad advice or poor decisions, refusing to play for us definitely backfired.”

A Tarnished Legacy at Carrow Road

Rowe was a standout performer for Norwich in the 2023/24 season, contributing to 14 goals and helping the team reach the Championship play-off semi-finals. His dynamic displays made him a rising star, with fans eager to see him develop further in yellow and green.

However, the way he forced his exit left a bitter taste. Despite his previous contributions, many supporters feel that bridges have been burned.

“I understand why he wanted to leave, but the way he did it left a sour taste,” Downes added. “I don’t think a return is possible, and honestly, I doubt many fans would want him back anyway.”

As Rowe’s future hangs in the balance, it’s clear that his decision to leave Norwich—and how he handled it—has left a lasting mark on his legacy at the club.
