Neil Warnock Hails Leeds United’s Daniel James as His Championship Favorite

Neil Warnock has singled out Leeds United winger Daniel James as his favorite player in the Championship.

Speaking on talkSPORT (5 February, 7:40 am), Warnock praised James for his outstanding attitude, contrasting it with that of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. He even admitted that James is a player he’d have relished managing during his career, expressing his disappointment that the Welsh winger was left on the bench during Leeds’ play-off final defeat to Southampton last May.

“When I watched Summerville and Rutter in the play-off final last year, I felt they played too individually,” Warnock said. “I remember pulling Daniel James aside—he’s been my favorite player in the Championship for years—and he wasn’t even playing that day.

“I told him, ‘If there’s one player I wish I could’ve managed, it’s you,’ because I love his attitude. Players like Daniel James set the tone for the entire team.”

Daniel James Rightfully Earns High Praise at Leeds

Warnock’s admiration for James is echoed by many Leeds United fans, with the Welsh international becoming one of the most feared wingers in the Championship. While Summerville and Rutter captured headlines last season, securing big-money Premier League moves, James quietly delivered with over 20 goal contributions.

He scored 13 goals and provided seven assists last season, and he’s already on track to surpass that this term, with eight goals and six assists so far—despite increased competition for spots on the wing. Willy Gnonto and Largie Ramazani are currently limited to bench roles as James and Manor Solomon solidify their places as key starters.

James has certainly justified his iconic number seven shirt at Elland Road, showcasing consistent performances that make him undroppable. This marks a stark contrast to the days when players like Paul Green and Luke Varney patrolled the flanks during Warnock’s tenure at Leeds. Today, it’s clear that any manager, including Warnock himself, would jump at the chance to have Daniel James on their team.
