Bairns Secure Crucial Victory in Thrilling Title Battle
Scott Arfield marked his return to Falkirk in spectacular fashion, netting a hat-trick to propel the Bairns back to the top of the Scottish Championship.
The 36-year-old midfielder rejoined Falkirk earlier this week on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers. Having started his professional career at the club, Arfield made over 100 appearances between 2007 and 2010 before moving to Huddersfield Town. His career later saw him feature for Burnley, Rangers, and Charlotte FC, with his time at Ibrox particularly memorable as he helped secure a Premiership title.
Determined to guide Falkirk back to the top tier, Arfield wasted no time making his mark. His three-goal performance helped John McGlynn’s side secure a dominant 5-2 victory over Partick Thistle, reclaiming the league’s top spot.
Arfield opened the scoring inside the first minute, but the visitors responded through Logan Chalmers and Brian Graham, turning the game in their favor by the 24th minute. However, Falkirk capitalized on the absence of fellow title contenders Ayr United and Livingston, who were occupied with Scottish Cup commitments.
Gary Oliver equalized in the 34th minute, reacting quickest after Brad Spencer’s missed penalty. Thistle’s troubles deepened shortly after, as Graham received a red card just two minutes later. Arfield then put Falkirk ahead before halftime and completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.
The veteran midfielder received a standing ovation when substituted in the 72nd minute, and Leon McCann added Falkirk’s fifth goal in the 76th minute.
The victory moves Falkirk to 49 points, two ahead of Ayr in second, with Livingston trailing in third with 45 points. All three teams have played 23 matches, setting up a crucial showdown next weekend when Falkirk hosts Ayr.
Reflecting on his return, Arfield expressed his determination to help Falkirk return to the top flight.
“I’m excited. It’s a great personal story and a big moment for the club,” he said. “When we were relegated, I was young and didn’t fully understand the consequences. Over the years, I’ve realized how much that season affected Falkirk.”
Arfield acknowledged the challenges ahead, with Ayr and Livingston posing strong competition, but remains optimistic about Falkirk’s future.
“It would be an incredible achievement to bring this club back to where it belongs,” he added. “Things are looking much brighter now, and we’re determined to restore Falkirk To the Premiership.”
