Rangers have secured a pre-contract agreement for Lyall Cameron, and Derek Ferguson believes they could make another similar signing.
The Ibrox club had a disappointing end to the transfer window, managing just one first-team signing. Centre-back Rafael Fernandes arrived on loan, with injuries forcing the club to bring in defensive reinforcements.
Looking ahead to the summer, Rangers may turn their attention to signing a new striker. Ferguson thinks their interest in Hearts forward Lawrence Shankland remains very much alive. The Scotland international’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he is unlikely to extend his stay at Tynecastle.
Speaking on Open Goal, Ferguson said:
“I’ve got a sneaky wee feeling that Rangers’ interest in Shankland isn’t dead. I like Shankland. Dessers is what he is—you never know what you’re going to get.
“I would take Shankland in a minute. You’re getting the Hearts captain at Rangers for next to nothing. Absolutely, I’d sign him.”
Shankland has long been linked with a move to Ibrox, and with a striker likely to be a priority in the summer, he could finally make the switch.
Cyriel Dessers Could Depart If Shankland Joins
Cyriel Dessers was heavily linked with a move away in January, with reports from Complete Sports suggesting he was close to an exit.
Struggles in front of goal saw him fall down the pecking order at Ibrox, making a departure seem likely. However, he remained at the club, meaning Rangers’ pursuit of a new striker could now shift to the summer window.
Shankland would not settle for being a third or fourth-choice striker—he would expect regular playing time if he moves to Rangers. Meanwhile, Hamza Igamane remains the current first-choice, but with interest building around him, his future is uncertain.
Manager Philippe Clement will undoubtedly want a reliable striker leading the line next season. While Shankland’s performances this season may not have been outstanding, signing him on a free transfer presents minimal risk for Rangers.
Additionally, he is seen as an upgrade on Dessers, something the Ibrox faithful will consider as discussions around his potential arrival continue.
