Ian Darke believes Leeds United could regret not strengthening their squad depth if they fail to secure promotion this season.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, the TV commentator discussed the challenges of the January transfer market for the Championship leaders.
Daniel Farke rotated his squad for Saturday’s (8 February) FA Cup fourth-round tie against Millwall, but his side fell to a 2-0 defeat at Elland Road. Only Ethan Ampadu retained his starting spot from the midweek victory over Coventry City, as several fringe players were given an opportunity to impress—one they ultimately failed to seize.
With crucial Championship fixtures ahead, Farke is expected to revert to his strongest lineup. However, should promotion slip away again, Leeds’ recruitment strategy may come under scrutiny.
“I think Leeds have done well with their current squad—I didn’t think they necessarily needed Cameron Archer—but having cover for someone like Piroe wouldn’t have been a bad idea, provided it was quality reinforcements,” Darke said.
“That kind of insurance is important because depth matters. Leeds have Sunderland, Sheffield United, and West Brom coming up, and they’ll need to prove their quality across the squad.
“If they don’t go up, questions will be asked about various aspects, including their transfer dealings. That said, I still believe they’re the best team in the league.”
Leeds’ cup performance was disappointing, but their main focus remains the Championship. Their next challenge is against Watford on Tuesday night (11 February), followed by three key fixtures that could define their season.
With the best attacking record in the division and a strong defense—only bettered by Burnley—Leeds appear well-positioned for promotion. However, Farke may now be reassessing his reliance on his squad players, as chairman Paraag Marathe watches with high expectations.
