Rangers have come under heavy criticism following a recent public financial disclosure at Ibrox.

The club has struggled with off-field stability, operating without a chairman and chief executive officer for a significant part of the season. While their performances on the pitch have improved, mismanagement at the boardroom level has sparked fan protests in recent weeks.

Gary Keown criticizes Rangers after Clement’s financial admission

Scottish Mail on Sunday columnist Gary Keown has strongly criticized Rangers after Philippe Clement revealed that the club lacked the funds to sign Lyall Cameron in the winter transfer window.

Instead of securing the Dundee midfielder immediately, the Gers could only manage a pre-contract agreement. Clement admitted he wanted the 22-year-old to join in January but was unable to do so due to financial constraints.

Keown expressed his frustration in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (9 February, page 92), stating:

“Look at Rangers—who, according to Clement, no longer have the financial resources to buy Cameron from Dundee before his contract expires. This is the result of years of reckless recruitment, ongoing losses, and poor asset management.”

Nils Koppen looks to reshape Ibrox recruitment

Despite Rangers’ recruitment struggles in recent years, technical director Nils Koppen appears to be making changes.

Since joining in January 2024, the Belgian has played an increasingly influential role at Ibrox, including overseeing adjustments to the club’s youth development strategy. This has led to several young players either going out on loan or earning more first-team opportunities in recent weeks.

Clement has handed regular game time to prospects like Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis, while Clinton Nsiala and Connor Barron have also played key roles this season.

Rangers seem focused on reducing the squad’s average age, and Cameron’s arrival in the summer aligns with that goal. While fans may be frustrated by the club’s inability to sign him in January, they will be eager to see him in action when he officially joins.
